Bottom trawling is the most destructive of any actions that humans conduct in the ocean.
The nets are often weighted, and destroy vast swathes of sea floor including coral reefs which are vital habitats for sea life.
Some bottom trawling operations catch 20 kg of "bykill" for every 1 kg of targeted species , including endangered species.
National Geographic reported, “A study of catch data published in 2006 in the journal Science grimly predicted that if fishing rates continue apace, all the world’s fisheries will have collapsed by the year 2048.”
